Update on Gallatin County Property Taxes: What You Need to Know

If you’re a property owner in Gallatin County, Montana, you may have recently received an amended second-half tax bill in your mailbox. Wondering what this is all about? Let’s break it down in simple terms.

Background Story:
Last year, the Montana Department of Revenue (DOR) decided that for the tax year 2023, a lower mill levy of 77.9 mills would be enough to meet the State School Equalization Funds’ budgetary needs. This was a reduction from the previous 95 mills that had been billed in past years. So, the property tax bill you received in November reflected this decrease.

The Twist:
However, things took a turn when Governor Gianforte sued Missoula County. This led to a Montana Supreme Court ruling that allowed the DOR to levy the maximum mill amount regardless of the budget. Consequently, Gallatin County has been instructed to collect the full 95 mills, and this has led to amended second-half tax bills being sent out.

What You Need to Do:
You should disregard the second-half payment due on the original bills sent last year and pay the amount stated on the amended bills instead. Don’t pay both! Even if you paid the full year’s taxes in December, you’ll still need to pay the amount indicated on this new bill. These additional taxes will go to the State of Montana, not to local jurisdictions.

Important Dates:
Second half property taxes are due by May 31. So make sure to mark your calendars!

If You Pay Through Your Mortgage:
If you usually pay your property taxes through your mortgage, it’s a good idea to check with your lender to ensure they’ll handle paying this amended bill.
